John Updike (1932-2009)

January 27, 2009

American author John Updike has died of lung cancer.  Best known for his Rabbit novels (Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabit is Rich; Rabbit at Rest; and Rabbit Remembered), Updike was a celebrated writer of short stories, non-fiction, novels, and poetry.

Often mentioned with the best authors of his age, Updike’s work has helped define an entire era of American literature.  Updike’s work often centers around domestic situations that are, on the surface, quotidian but are actually tortured and sentimental.  In recent years, Updike has published many novels and has become well known as a literary critic as well.

His work will stand as a touchstone of the 20th century American literary oeuvre and his influence will be felt for generations to come.

the loss of John Updike makes me wonder if the literary world is being replenished at the same rate that it’s losing such great writers
