Today in Literature

January 28, 2009

28 January 1873: French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette was born. Colette is credited with inventing the modern teenager, being the first truly modern woman who almost obsessively promoted herself, and being the first woman to be given a state funeral.

As for an authentic villain, the real thing, the absolute, the artist, one rarely meets him even once in a lifetime. The ordinary bad hat is always in part a decent fellow.

Additionally (you may have rightly assumed that the painting above was not painted by Colette), on this date in 1912 the famed American abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming.
