Today in Literature

February 18, 2009

18 February 1883: Nikos Kazantzakis, the famed Cretan poet, was born. Really, he’s Greek but it is much more fun to call him a Cretan. Though he is best known for his novel Zorba the Greek, many find his 33,000 line sequel to to Odyssey, The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel, more impressive. I had a mythology professor who spoke often and highly of Kazantzakis and I understand that he is still often read and respected throughout the Greek isles.

Other Notable Birthdays: Martin Luther, Toni Morrison, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
